Leaving the server closet: hosted Electron in 2016
Until 2016 the product lived on a server we shipped to the shop, or, for our own early customers around the Triangle, on a machine in a closet at our Raleigh office. It worked until it did not. A storm, a full disk, an update nobody scheduled.
That spring we moved customer data to a hosted environment on Azure. New shops from then on have been hosted only. We did not pretend the cutover was a feature launch. It was a week of checking that yesterday's jobs were still yesterday's jobs.
A few older installs stayed on-prem while those owners decided. We are not selling new on-prem systems. If you still have one, email danap@electronapps.com and we will plan the move with you.
